question

Throughout the entire novel it seems as if all of the charcters are using each other in some way. Which characters do you feel are using the others for the bettering of Arrakis and which do you feel are using others for their own selfish motives?

  1. Could there be more options than just advancing Arrakis or personal gain?

  2. i agree with zac ..... i see alterior motive in the fact that not only is everyone concerned about the planet Arrakis but they also seem to have an underlying factor that is never truely voiced in the novel.... Theme perhaps ?

  3. There could be an ulterior motive because why would people that haven't always lived on Arrakis like the Harkonnens be all of a sudden be so concerned or bothered about the people of Arrakis and the spice?

  4. I believe the countless groups introduced in the book could have different views entirely. Harkonnens, personal gain of Political power. The Atreides, to maintain power, and eventually, to improve Arrakis' living conditions, Bene Gesserit to ensure that their reach remains ever so extensive, the CHOAM for profit, and Fremen, of course, to Better Arrakis, or perhaps just survive.

The Emperor also wants to keep control of Arrakis, through House Harkonnen, to keep the Aggressive Paul Atreides from destroying the Spice on Arrakis, which would cause enormous numbers of death from Spice Withdrawel all around the known universe.

  5. I believe that the Atreides are trying to better Arrakis. The Harkonnens seem to be more interested in personal gain. They seem to be striving more for their own personal gain and political power instead of the well being of Arrakis.
