Religion ? what is it really ?

In the novel Dune religion is very evident in the fact that young Paul has quite the legend to fill in more than one culture on the desert planet. Is this legend so to speak symbolic or represented by our own religious beliefs ?

Zac Muad'Dib's Question

Alright, so I have read Dune now. I have, I believe, come to understand most of the plot and sub-plots pretty well, however, I cannot understand the Bene Gesserit thing yet. I understand that the Bene Gesserit practice Controlled Genetic Breeding so that they might create the Kwisatz Haderach, which is the name for the prophesized messiah, yet, I do not understand the purpose of the Bene Gesserit doing this, or why the Bene Gesserit look down on Paul and Jessica after Paul turns out to be the Kwisatz Haderach.

Home sweet home OR not

"Perhaps this planet could grow on one. Perhaps it could become a good home...and it could be a hideous place, the Duke thought." Can a harsh environment or situation be paradoxically "good" for a person? What other works of literature show characters in similar situations?

Diction old and coined

"And the race knew only one sure way for this--the ancient way, the tried and certain way that rolled over everything in its path: jihad."

Herbert created a glossary of coined terms for his novel Dune, yet in the above quote he used an actual Arab word "jihad." Is this significant? What could be implied?

Religion, Law, Power

"Religion and law among our masses must be one and the same." Just how closely is religion woven into the power structure of Arrakis?

Princess Irulan alludes to this relationship when she writes that it is essential to know the Harkonnens to understand Muad Dib that attempting to know without the other is "to attempt seeing Truth without knowing Falsehood...the attempt to see Light without knowing Darkness."

Clarissa point of view

I actually am not having much trouble following the diction and termnology of the story thus far. Granted I have not read very far but the books I enjoy reading consist of the same science fiction concepts of imaginary places and use of native and coined terms.I only find it difficult to adjust myself to the new place and culture of this book during the opening because I haven't been assimilated yet to the culture but once I get into the book it will be like I am a native.

Worm Free Discussion Zone

To get into Dune readers must accept the premise and suspend judgment of the probability of this fictional world. What ideas did you find must difficult to accept and why?
