To get into Dune readers must accept the premise and suspend judgment of the probability of this fictional world. What ideas did you find must difficult to accept and why?
In the book the hardest things for me to understand are some of the made up words like; Maud'Dib, Kwisatz Haderach, CHOAM, Truthsayer, Harkonnens, Bene Gesserit, Mentat, Fremen, gom jabbar, crysknife, and lasgun. It's also hard to accept that there is a planet like Arrakis that is full of people although seems to be barely desirable and habitable. Another thing that's hard to accept is the huge worms that crawl around and eat spice deposits and destroy the spice buildings. I don't get how worms could be that big or be that dangerous.
I agree with Rachel.... The diction in the book makes it incredibly hard to understand just what exactly is going on. I have read the opening to the book about three times and I still don't feel like I have a full grasp on it. The idea of giant worms was a little easier for me to grasp because I have seen all of the Tremors movies. I also don't fully understand the whole " spice" substance in general.
The diction is difficult, but I believe I am beginning to get a hang of it, and also getting used to some custom words. Where I think I may have a grasp on the Harkonnens and Fremen, Bene Gesserit and the Mentats, I am still having troubles comprehending the whole "Plot" behnd the House against House war. From what I have read thus far, I believe the Harkonnens is just another House, such as the Atreides, Paul's Family, that has been, and perhaps ruled, or tried, with merciless or tyrannical methods,if that makes sense. I believe that the Fremen are, as I think they somewhat sound in their name, are another race on Arrakis, probably been there a good deal longer, and just want to be free of Harkonnen Rule. Also, the image of overly sized rabid worms comes pretty easily to my mind, however, I have read several times now that the Spice is in EVERYTHING, they even say it's in the air and food and such, and where that is somewhat difficult to understand, it also says that it is like a poison, that when you obtain to much, you cannot do without it or you will perish. That is a difficult perspective of spice to really understand in my case.
It also states about the spice that once tasted for the first time it always has a familiar feeling. Yet it is always different it is described in the earlier parts of the book as tasting like cinnamon the first time it was tasted. The " Spice" is a very intriguing item indeed. The house to house rule is another difficult thing, however is it a more political action than a head on feutal war ? I also feel like the book glides much better if you just keep pushing through the opening section.
This book is hard to follow because it is hard to think of a fictional place. Im not really understandeing the book, hopefully as I get ferther into the book it will make scice. It has relly big diction to.
The fact that there is a planet out there that is supporting life is hard to grasp. The life on that planet is not very good.I don't understand why they are still living there. If there were giant worms out there I know I wouldn't be living there! The diction in this book is hard to figure out also.
The diction is very hard to understand because of all of the foereign words, but I also am having a hard time grasping the main purpose for the move, because the Duke obviously loves his family but he is willing to put them in severe danger, such as Paul's brush with death as soon as they arrived..and what is the CHOAM?
The diction is obviously a little hard to understand, although it helps now that I finally figured out that there is a glossary in the back. Mostly though I'm having trouble understanding the huge problem with water. I don't see why they can't bring water from other planets and incorporate it into their own ecosystem. I'm sure it has something to do with the emperor or the guild it is just hard for me to understand what reasons could be behind it.
Spice....so it causes the user to live longer? And makes them able to see the future? I'm confused. Alien creatures and weird worlds are things that I can handle. As long as the object requires something like water or food or air, it makes sense. If the object maintains some sort of tie to authenticity, stretching reality is possible. As far as the longevity caused by spice, that's fine, no problem. The popular archetype of a substance that causes a person's lifespan to grow suggests that there may be some truth behind it. However, something that enables a being to tell the future? Not so believable. Precognition is, in essence, paranormal. A little hard to understand. Seems similar to the concept of time travel, one thing changes and everything else is completely altered. But I digress, in short I will have to remember that it is scienceFICTION.
I believe the CHOAM is like, the large Trading Organization. I think it also is supposed to be incredibly powerful as it has control over all Interplanetary commerce.
And to help Blake's question, they are more or less required to live on Arrakis once they have been there too long. The reason for this is that the spice, which is in everything on Arrakis, is a poison, which is only deadly if they stop taking it. The fremen also have the blue eyes because of their spice diets. So everybody lives on teh Worm Planet because they are addicted to the spice there and they need to continue consuming it to survive.
I myself cannot figure out how the Bene gesserit and the CHOAM is related with the Padishah Emperor.
